What Are the Benefits of DAXXIFY, A New FDA-Approved Anti-Wrinkle Treatment?

September 15, 2022
Fredric M. Barr

For many patients seeking alternatives to plastic surgery, minimally invasive injectables are the preferred rejuvenation option. In September 2022, the FDA approved DAXXIFY™ (daxibotulinumtoxinA-lanm), a new and promising injectable anti-wrinkle treatment from the biotechnology company Revance.

DAXXIFY™ will most likely become available in the U.S. in 2023. Should you try this innovative neuromodulator? West Palm Beach, FL plastic surgeon Dr. Fredric M. Barr, M.D., F.A.C.S., of Palm Beach Plastic & Cosmetic Surgery, explains how DAXXIFY™ works and what it offers.

DAXXIFY™ Acts Like BOTOX® and Other Injectable Neuromodulators

DAXXIFY™ belongs to the injectable neuromodulator group, which also includes BOTOX®, Dysport®, and others. Neuromodulators smooth wrinkles by interrupting the nerve-muscle signal and causing the muscle to relax.

Injectables work wonders on frown lines, forehead creases, crow’s feet, and other wrinkles due to overactive facial muscles.

DAXXIFY™ Benefits

DAXXIFY™’s reported high efficiency makes patients and plastic surgeons eager to try this new treatment and compare it to other anti-wrinkle injectables. Here’s why so many people can’t wait for DAXXIFY™ to become available in the U.S. market.

1. DAXXIFY™ Offers a Powerful, Lasting Rejuvenation Effect

While neuromodulators work differently for every patient, most currently available injectable treatments will reduce wrinkles for about three months, after which the patient would need a repeat procedure to preserve the effect.

DAXXIFY™’s results may last longer: clinical trials showed DAXXIFY™ maintains its rejuvenating effect for four months in 80% of the users, for six months in 50% of the users, and up to nine months in some users. For many patients, opting for DAXXIFY™ could mean fewer trips to the plastic surgery clinic, which would be a game-changer for busy people. Many patients are happy with the results of anti-wrinkle neuromodulators but wish they could go longer between treatments.

Out of 2,700 patients, 98% had minimal-to-no visible wrinkles on the part of the body that underwent DAXXIFY™ treatment. Thus, the risk of DAXXIFY™ not working for you is negligible. Even better, this new neuromodulator requires no refrigeration, so there’s no danger of losing its potency if it gets warm.

2. DAXXIFY™Is Highly Safe

DAXXIFY™ consists of peptides and does not include animal or human products, which minimizes the risk of allergies.

Clinical trials uncovered no significant side effects related to DAXXIFY™ treatment. A small percentage of users reported effects like headaches, drooping eyelids, and slight temporary facial asymmetry, similar to other neuromodulators' potential side effects.

Although the FDA had flagged Revance’s record-keeping and quality control at some points of the approval process, which delayed DAXXIFY™’s release, these were primarily technical issues that didn’t reflect on the product’s safety or efficiency. Revance has successfully worked through these problems and gained FDA approval.

3. DAXXIFY™ May Have Other Uses Aside From Cosmetic Procedures

Most people are familiar with neuromodulators as a rejuvenation treatment and an alternative to plastic surgery. However, they may provide other benefits.

BOTOX®, for example, is an FDA-approved treatment for certain types of overactive bladder, urinary incontinence, excessive underarm sweating, chronic migraines, and more. Many authorities predict that DAXXIFY™, too, may soon have indications other than anti-wrinkle treatment. At this time, Revance is looking into the effect of DAXXIFY™ on cervical dystonia, a form of neck muscle spasms.

Should You Try DAXXIFY™?

With such promising research, you may feel you can hardly wait to try DAXXIFY™. Because it’s a new treatment with limited data, and because every anti-wrinkle procedure works differently for every patient, it may be easier to compare the effect of DAXXIFY™ to BOTOX® or other neuromodulators for you, specifically if you have tried another injectable before. After the first few months, you can see whether DAXXIFY™ keeps your skin smooth longer than other treatments.

The comparative cost of DAXXIFY™ and other treatments is unclear at the moment. Revance hasn’t disclosed the price per treatment yet. Thus, it’s hard to predict whether patients who choose DAXXIFY™ over other injectables will enjoy lower overall costs by having fewer procedures per year.

Only time and personal experience can tell whether DAXXIFY™ is the right rejuvenation option for you.
