What Is Erbium Laser Skin Resurfacing in West Palm Beach, Florida?

Are you concerned about hyperpigmentation, sun damage, and fine lines? While traditional skincare products may fall short, laser treatments offer the power of precision technology for stunning results. Among laser treatments, Erbium laser resurfacing stands alone as a solution for a range of skin issues, from acne scars to sun damage.

The Erbium laser is a powerful tool for skin rejuvenation and resurfacing. By removing the outer layer of skin, it stimulates the natural healing process and reveals healthier, clearer, and tighter skin. This laser also penetrates into the deep layers of skin, promoting collagen stimulation and effectively treating various skin conditions. One advantage of the Erbium laser over other ablative lasers is the reduced recovery time and lower risk of side effects. However, it's important to consult with an expert to determine if this treatment is suitable for you.

Benefits of Erbium Laser Resurfacing

Erbium laser resurfacing:

  • Reverses sun damage and improves your skin's appearance
  • Effectively treats fine lines, wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation for a youthful and flawless complexion
  • Requires no downtime, so you can enjoy the benefits without interrupting your busy schedule
  • Ensures that everyone can achieve beautiful, healthy skin because it can be safer for those with a darker skin tone

How Does Erbium Laser Resurfacing Work?

Erbium laser resurfacing erases lines and wrinkles on your face, hands, neck, and chest. This revolutionary method offers a more precise removal of old skin cell layers, leaving you with minimal damage to surrounding tissues and faster recovery time compared to CO2 laser resurfacing. With an Erbium laser, you will not experience swelling, bruising, or redness.

Who Is the Best Candidate for An Erbium Laser Resurfacing Treatment?

Consult your doctor to find the most suitable laser treatment for your cosmetic concerns. If you have a lighter skin tone, Erbium laser resurfacing is a safer option compared to other resurfacing lasers. It's particularly beneficial for individuals with lighter-toned Black, Hispanic, or Asian skin. Patients with darker brown skin should explore alternative resurfacing options like radio-frequency treatments or microneedling. Furthermore, individuals with Fitzpatrick skin types 4 to 6 should exercise caution and avoid Erbium laser resurfacing altogether, because there is a risk of hypo/hyperpigmentation. Discuss any such concerns during your consultation, and we will highlight the appropriate approach for your needs.

Other Factors to Consider Before Undergoing an Erbium Laser Resurfacing Treatment

Some skin conditions or habits aren’t compatible with Erbium laser treatment. We address these important considerations below.

Cold Sore Sufferers: Laser Treatments Can Trigger Breakouts

If you're someone who often deals with cold sores or fever blisters, it's important to be cautious before undergoing laser treatments. The American Board of Cosmetic Surgery advises that these procedures may be a potential trigger for breakouts.

Acne Medication Users: Be Aware of Healing Challenges

If you're currently using acne medications that contain isotretinoin (such as Accutane), it's crucial to know that these can impact the healing process following laser resurfacing. Take this into consideration before scheduling your treatment.

Quit Smoking for a Successful Laser Treatment Recovery

Smokers, take note: To ensure optimal healing from laser treatments, quit smoking at least two weeks prior to the procedure. Letting go of this habit will significantly increase your chances of a successful recovery.

Preparing for an Erbium Laser Resurfacing Treatment

After meeting with our patient counselor to determine if Erbium laser resurfacing is right for you, you will schedule an appointment.

At least one month before your laser treatment, refrain from excessive sun exposure and facial peels, including chemical peels, microdermabrasion, and other laser resurfacing procedures.

On the day of your Erbium laser resurfacing treatment, arrive with clean skin.

For guidance based on your unique situation, talk to your plastic surgeon about using topical treatments like Retin-A, glycolic acid, and vitamin C before your laser skin resurfacing.

What to Expect During An Erbium Laser Treatment

Before the treatment begins, your medical team will cleanse and numb the treatment area with a local anesthetic. The duration of your appointment will vary depending on the area(s) being treated, with isolated facial treatments taking around 30 to 45 minutes, while full-face treatments can take up to two hours.

After the Erbium laser treatment, expect to have a non-stick dressing applied to the treated areas for a full 24 hours. Once the dressing is removed, you will need to adjust your skincare routine. Instead of your regular routine, you will cleanse your skin two to five times a day with saline or a diluted vinegar solution, as recommended by your doctor. Following the cleansing, apply an emollient ointment like Aquaphor to keep your skin moisturized and prevent scabbing.

During the recovery period, you may experience some redness, bruising, and mild swelling for about one to three days, followed by skin flaking for another two to three days. In general, complete recovery/healing takes about three to four weeks, depending on the specific skin concerns being addressed.

How Many Erbium Laser Procedures Does It Take to See Results?

How many treatments do you need? While the results may differ from person to person, even just one treatment can lead to significant results. However, if you're looking for specific outcomes, you may need multiple treatments, which can be repeated every 6 to 12 months.

How Much Does Erbium Laser Resurfacing Cost?

The exact price will depend on the size of the treatment area, the complexity of the case, and the number of sessions required to achieve the desired results. We’ll discuss your unique needs during your consultation. At Palm Beach Plastic & Cosmetic Surgery, we offer CareCredit® and other financing options to help you achieve a more youthful appearance and enhanced self-confidence.

Is An Erbium Laser Right for Me?

From acne scarring and lines and wrinkles to the damage caused by heavy sun exposure, an Erbium laser treatment session can help patients with lighter skin tones restore their natural radiance with minimal patient discomfort. Individuals with darker skin tones should consult their plastic surgeon to determine whether Erbium lasers or another ablative laser could provide the superficial resurfacing they seek without causing discoloration.

Our Faqs

Q

If I am seeking to undergo a combination of procedures, will they be done together or consecutively? What is the timeline for multiple procedures?

A

The answer depends on multiple factors, including the specific combination of procedures, your recovery rates, your age and health status, and your behaviors or habits. More invasive surgeries typically require recovery time ranging between 6 and 12 weeks to 6 months, and surgeries to the same area of your body will also generally require recovery time between procedures.

However, if you are in good health and the combination of procedures in question will be performed on different parts of your body and are not especially invasive, a combination of procedures could potentially be approved together on a case-by-case basis. It is imperative that the combination of procedures does not compromise your healing, and your attention to prescribed pre-operation and recovery habits also plays a significant role. Schedule a consultation for an assessment and guidance regarding the procedures you are considering.

Q

Will it be obvious that I “got work done” after my procedure?

A

While aging affects us all, there are steps we can take to put forth a more vibrant appearance. We seek to perform subtle adjustments to address imperfections and the wear of time while retaining your natural look. While you should notice an improvement, the glaring changes or distortions in appearance you are concerned about and may have seen from other surgeons’ work do not meet the standard of quality plastic and cosmetic surgery we perform in our office.

Dr. Frederic M. Barr is a board-certified Plastic & Cosmetic Surgeon with over 30 years of experience performing Plastic Surgery in South Florida. We enhance and refine your appearance according to your goals. Review our Gallery of Before & After Photos to see some examples of our work.

Q

What does Breast Explant Surgery entail, and will my breasts be “back to normal” after the surgery?

A

For patients with Breast Implant Illness (BII), which can include allergy, auto-immune, and thyroid hormone issues, this has been an emerging topic with significant press coverage in recent years. Although numerous medical professionals have demonstrated varying responses to these women’s concerns, we believe in addressing these women’s experiences and symptoms. In response to this phenomenon, we have also chosen not to perform new breast implant surgeries. We perform Total Capsulectomy on patients with breast implants, which involves the removal of both the saline or silicone implant and the capsule around it.

Removal of the implants and surrounding scar tissue has been shown to improve women’s health concerning these symptoms. While some women choose no further procedure following Breast Explant Surgery, some patients elect to have a Mastopexy procedure that involves reshaping the breast tissue for a pleasant cosmetic breast appearance. We welcome your specific questions regarding these procedures and their anticipated effects for your situation. See our Breast Implant Explantation (Total Capsulectomy) page for more detailed information, including before-and-after photo examples.
