Sciton® JOULE™: Get Rid of the Sun Damage

July 15, 2022
Fredric M. Barr

Did you know that 90 percent of skin aging is caused by the sun, according to the EPA? Although the sun’s warmth may feel great, it can harm your skin. If you aren’t using sun protection, sun damage can occur while you take a quick walk to get your mail or run errands outside. In addition to applying sunscreen, you should avoid the sun by wearing clothing that covers most of your skin or by staying in shaded areas. Additionally, we recommend avoiding tanning beds—a quick way to develop wrinkly, aging skin. At Palm Beach Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery, headed by Plastic Surgeon Fredric M. Barr, M.D., F.A.C.S., we put safety and honesty at the core of our practice. Read on to discover more about protecting your skin from the sun and how Sciton® JOULE™ can get rid of sun damage you may already have.

The Importance of Sun Protection

The only way to prevent sun damage is to wear sunscreen every day. Apply an SPF of 30 or higher daily in the morning and reapply if you plan to spend a significant amount of time in the sun. Even on cloudy days, you should wear sunscreen because you can still get a sunburn or sun damage. We know it’s difficult to remember sunscreen every day and that sun damage—which can appear as leathery-feeling skin, wrinkles, or sun spots—is inevitable for most people. Fortunately, skin laser treatments like Sciton® JOULE™ can rejuvenate your skin and eliminate evidence of sun damage.

What is Sciton® JOULE™?

Why is Sciton® JOULE™ the most advanced skin laser treatment in the industry? This multi-purpose skincare tool features three distinct delivery modes: arm, fiber, and broadband light, which work together to target four different aspects of a woman’s beauty: skin, health, body, and hair. The single platform lasers in the Sciton® JOULE™ can address the following and more:

  • Sun damage
  • Acne scars
  • Age spots
  • Pigmented lesions
  • Psoriasis

The Sciton® JOULE™’s three types of lasers contribute to its versatility. One of its lasers, the world’s first fractional resurfacing laser, can be recalibrated based on various skin types and the kind of work each patient requires. Thanks to its modular combination of lasers and lights, Palm Beach Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery can purchase and install modules as innovative technologies and treatments become available. For this reason, the Sciton® JOULE™ is one of the most effective among all our aesthetic and surgical treatments.

Benefits of Sciton® JOULE™ for Treating Sun Damage

When using the Sciton® JOULE™ to address sun damage, we use the broadband light mode to evenly target the specific area of the damage compared to other lasers that only target one small area at a time. The light heats dermal collagen, which initiates the body’s natural healing process and encourages firmer skin. Collagen production is essential for having more youthful skin and eliminating signs of aging. Sciton® JOULE™ laser treatment is effective and safe for use on all types of skin. Lastly, since laser treatments are non-invasive, they involve minimal downtime after treatment.

Remember, Sciton® JOULE™ does not replace sunscreen. You should continue to wear sunscreen daily to prevent further damage and support the results of your laser treatment. In addition to the Sciton® JOULE™, Dr. Barr can perform these skin laser treatments:

  • eMatrix Laser Sublative Rejuvenation: helps to reduce wrinkles, acne scars, and sun damage while tightening the skin
  • Fractional CO2/Erbium Laser Resurfacing: helps to reduce wrinkles and uneven pigmentation by targeting areas deep within the skin
  • Fraxel Laser Treatment: repairs skin spot by spot to reveal more youthful skin
  • Laser Photo Rejuvenation: to help restore a youthful appearance and tighten the skin

The Sciton® JOULE™, combined with Dr. Barr’s expertise, guarantees five-star service and compelling results. We will help you treat your sun damage while achieving a refreshed look.

Sciton® JOULE™ Laser Ablation and Coagulation

Why are laser skin and hair treatments so effective? Throughout the procedure, known as “ablation,” the practitioner uses the laser to create micro-abrasions in the skin. If necessary, they can employ the laser to strip away one or more layers of skin, revealing the more youthful layers beneath. This procedure stimulates your skin and starts the healing process, replacing old, aging cells with new young ones.

On the other hand, we can use a coagulation process to tighten the skin depending on the patient's goals. Coagulation stimulates collagen production in deeper layers of the skin to firm them and restore a more youthful shape.

We can also use ablation and coagulation for the most noticeable effect to stimulate new cell growth and collagen production simultaneously.

What Is The Recovery Time Following A Sciton® JOULE™ Treatment?

Healing from Sciton® JOULE™ varies depending on the mode we use. With broadband light therapy, there is nearly no downtime after treatment. If you undergo shallow laser resurfacing, you can expect a downtime of up to three days. You can expect five to 10 days of downtime with deep laser resurfacing.
