Restylane® is a series of hyaluronic acid facial fillers that can help mitigate the natural aging process by smoothing facial wrinkles and frown lines, firming facial contours, and adding volume to lips and cheeks. Plastic surgeons in West Palm Beach typically use Restylane® on strategic skin areas such as the patient’s cheeks, lips, nasolabial folds, and the lines around the mouth.
Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a natural compound widely present in different areas of the body, including the neural system, connective tissues, and skin. It helps bind water to collagen, thus preserving skin moisture.
Unfortunately, hyaluronic acid production in the body slows down as we age. Together with the dwindling of collagen and elastin, this results in loss of moisture and volume and ultimately leads to the typical signs of aging: wrinkles, skin sagging, and loss of contour.
Restylane® injections treat wrinkles and sagging by giving the skin a hyaluronic acid boost and restoring moisture, firmness, and volume to strategic areas.
The Restylane® brand includes several products. The formulations are dermal filler injections based on hyaluronic acid, but each product targets a different treatment area. The Restylane® line includes:
The optimal Restylane® treatment depends on the designated treatment areas and patient goals. It’s best to schedule a consultation with an expert plastic surgeon for guidance on the best treatment to achieve your desired results.
Restylane® is FDA-approved for patients over 21. Over the past two decades, patients worldwide—and across West Palm Beach County—have enhanced their facial appearance with over 15 million Restylane® procedures.
This type of dermal filler gel treatment is generally considered very safe when an expert injector performs it. Side effects, usually minor and temporary, include pain, swelling, bruising, topical itching, and headache. The side effects should dissipate within 2-3 days. However, Restylane® isn’t a good fit for some patients, including:
Many patients worldwide choose Restylane® injectable dermal filler products for their multiple advantages, which include:
Restylane® dermal fillers act exactly like the hyaluronic acid the body produces naturally. The line’s unique formula allows it to achieve maximum effectiveness in restoring skin volume, smoothness, and elasticity.
The NASHA technology Restylane® uses results in a diverse, flexible line of products, each one with a different particle size for individually customized treatments.
Finer particles target tiny wrinkles and allow high-definition shaping. Medium-sized particles act on moderate to severe facial wrinkles, folds, and laugh lines, and larger particles work on severe, multiple wrinkles and lines.
Different Restylane® products use patented formulations that give each product unique properties and make it a perfect fit for a specific area: the face, lips, or hands.
Many patients wonder how Restylane® performs compared to other injectable treatments like Botox and Juvederm. It is essential to know how each treatment works to understand the difference between these products and their expected outcome.
While Restylane® is an HA-based dermal filler, Botox injections use a botulinum toxin to treat skin wrinkles. Both procedures are effective and usually involve quick recovery and minimal disruption of the patient’s everyday activities.
However, while Botox mainly works on reducing facial wrinkles, Restylane® improves face and lip contouring. Restylane® also usually provides a longer-lasting effect compared to Botox.
Both Restylane® and Juvederm are HA-based dermal fillers. Both types of injections give comparable appearance improvement, but Restylane® treatments work particularly well on facial folds and marionette lines near the cheeks and nose.
Restylane® is a quick in-office procedure that involves little to no pain. The doctor will usually administer a topical anesthetic to minimize the patient’s discomfort and sanitize the injection sites before starting the injection process.
Depending on the scope of the procedure, the entire Restylane® treatment process takes between a few to 30 minutes. The patient should see an almost immediate effect.
Most patients recover quickly and can resume their normal activities shortly after a Restylane® treatment. Some swelling, bruising, redness, and localized pain are expected during the recovery process and should disappear within a few days.
Patients should call their doctor at once if they experience excessive pain, bleeding, an infection, or an allergic reaction.
“When will I need a repeat procedure?” is another common question patients ask before they walk out of the clinic. While individual results may differ, on average, the effect of a Restylane® treatment will last between 6 and 18 months.
How long the procedure’s benefits last may depend on the specific face or body treatment area, the number and volume of injections, and each patient’s metabolism.

Restylane® Injections Before and After Photos*
The answer depends on multiple factors, including the specific combination of procedures, your recovery rates, your age and health status, and your behaviors or habits. More invasive surgeries typically require recovery time ranging between 6 and 12 weeks to 6 months, and surgeries to the same area of your body will also generally require recovery time between procedures.
However, if you are in good health and the combination of procedures in question will be performed on different parts of your body and are not especially invasive, a combination of procedures could potentially be approved together on a case-by-case basis. It is imperative that the combination of procedures does not compromise your healing, and your attention to prescribed pre-operation and recovery habits also plays a significant role. Schedule a consultation for an assessment and guidance regarding the procedures you are considering.
While aging affects us all, there are steps we can take to put forth a more vibrant appearance. We seek to perform subtle adjustments to address imperfections and the wear of time while retaining your natural look. While you should notice an improvement, the glaring changes or distortions in appearance you are concerned about and may have seen from other surgeons’ work do not meet the standard of quality plastic and cosmetic surgery we perform in our office.
Dr. Frederic M. Barr is a board-certified Plastic & Cosmetic Surgeon with over 30 years of experience performing Plastic Surgery in South Florida. We enhance and refine your appearance according to your goals. Review our Gallery of Before & After Photos to see some examples of our work.
For patients with Breast Implant Illness (BII), which can include allergy, auto-immune, and thyroid hormone issues, this has been an emerging topic with significant press coverage in recent years. Although numerous medical professionals have demonstrated varying responses to these women’s concerns, we believe in addressing these women’s experiences and symptoms. In response to this phenomenon, we have also chosen not to perform new breast implant surgeries. We perform En Bloc Capsulectomy on patients with breast implants, which involves the removal of both the saline or silicone implant and the capsule around it.
Removal of the implants and surrounding scar tissue has been shown to improve women’s health concerning these symptoms. While some women choose no further procedure following Breast Explant Surgery, some patients elect to have a Mastopexy procedure that involves reshaping the breast tissue for a pleasant cosmetic breast appearance. We welcome your specific questions regarding these procedures and their anticipated effects for your situation. See our Breast Implant Explantation (En Bloc) page for more detailed information, including before-and-after photo examples.
We only utilize injectables and safe procedures for our patients, though any procedure involves some degree of risk. Proper performance and the surgeon's skills and experience performing the procedure are vital factors affecting patients’ safety. At Palm Beach Plastic & Cosmetic Surgery, our surgeon is Board-Certified, with over 30 years of experience. We enforce a high standard to maintain safety for our clients and competitors. See our Injectable Procedures Overview for a list of injectable procedures and more information on each.
