Xeomin® in West Palm Beach, Florida

Xeomin®, the brand name for incobotulinumtoxinA injections, is an FDA-approved prescription medication that belongs to the class of botulinum toxin type A products, often used to eliminate or reduce facial lines and wrinkles. This innovative injectable treatment targets glabellar lines (the vertical lines between the eyebrows), crow's feet, lines around the mouth, fine lines, wrinkles, and other signs of facial aging.

Similar to BOTOX® and Dysport®, Xeomin® contains botulinum toxin, a safe and FDA-approved treatment, and works by temporarily diminishing muscle activity,  significantly reducing wrinkles in the treated area. At our West Palm Beach office, we help patients achieve wrinkle-free skin with this nonsurgical cosmetic procedure — a popular alternative to BOTOX® and Dysport®.

Benefits of Xeomin®

Much like other botulinum toxin products, Xeomin gives patients a more youthful appearance, smoothing out forehead lines, glabellar lines, and other areas of concern on the face. The many benefits of Xeomin include:

  • A more relaxed, yet alert facial expression
  • Desired results lasting up to four months
  • Smoother skin around the eyes, mouth, and between the eyebrows
  • Younger-looking skin

What Issues Does Xeomin® Address?

Most patients opt for Xeomin® to treat one or more of the following:

  • Frown lines
  • Crow’s feet
  • Smoker’s lines
  • Laugh lines
  • Smile lines
  • Glabellar lines

How Does Xeomin® Work?

Repeated contractions of the muscles we use to make facial expressions primarily cause facial lines. As we live our lives and use these muscles with varying degrees of intensity, we inadvertently stretch and strain the skin on our face.

As a botulinum toxin type injectable, Xeomin® joins other botulinum toxin products like BOTOX® and Dysport® in the drug family known as neuromodulators. Xeomin® temporarily paralyzes the targeted facial muscles, providing an opportunity for your face to relax and turn back the clock to a smoother, more youthful appearance. As West Palm Beach plastic surgeons can attest, only a knowledgeable and experienced medical professional should administer cosmetic treatments like Xeomin® and BOTOX®.

Resolving Dynamic Wrinkles

There are two types of wrinkles: those created by the natural process of aging and the increase in the skin's laxity as we grow older, and wrinkles that develop as a direct result of the repetitive use of our facial muscles over time. We refer to the latter as dynamic wrinkles.

BOTOX® and Xeomin® and other neuromodulators target dynamic wrinkles by obstructing the nerve signals that instruct specific facial muscles to move. By preventing these facial muscles from moving, Xeomin® smooths out dynamic wrinkles and impedes their ability to form in the future.

Xeomin® and BOTOX®: Understanding the Difference

Unlike BOTOX® and other botulinum toxin products, Xeomin® is formulated without the unnecessary proteins that serve no therapeutic function. The absence of these accessory proteins makes Xeomin® an attractive option for patients seeking treatment for frown lines and other cosmetic concerns because it significantly reduces the risk of adverse reactions and allergic reactions.

Furthermore, this purified form of a botulinum toxin without unnecessary proteins allows for precise dosing with the same results as BOTOX®, making it a preferred choice for many patients seeking non-surgical facial rejuvenation. It delivers quick results with little to no downtime.

What Can I Expect During a Xeomin® Injection?

We perform this quick procedure — often described as a "lunchtime procedure" — in our West Palm Beach office. For most patients, these injection services take between 30 minutes to one hour, with the injection process itself usually taking less than 10 minutes.

After applying a topical anesthetic, we inject Xeomin® directly into the muscles underlying the frown lines and any other areas of concern. The active ingredient in Xeomin® blocks the release of the chemicals that cause muscle contractions responsible for forming frown lines. Consequently, the treated area appears smoother and less wrinkled. The resolution time for injection site pain from Xeomin® varies among patients; however, mild swelling, pain and redness at the injection site usually resolve almost immediately. Many patients resume normal activities shortly after the procedure.

How to Prepare for Your Xeomin® Treatment

Before your treatment, you will meet with our patient counselor to discuss your unique goals and concerns, so we can tailor a protocol for you. Prior to your Xeomin® injection, we encourage you to eat a full, nutritious meal and avoid consuming caffeine, as these steps can decrease your chances of feeling dizzy or lightheaded during the treatment.

Recovery and Aftercare for Xeomin®

It's important for patients to adhere to specific recovery and aftercare guidelines following treatment, to optimize results and minimize adverse reactions.

  1. Makeup Application: Refrain from applying makeup to the treated areas for at least 24 hours, as makeup application can potentially disperse the toxins and irritate the skin.
  2. Sun Exposure: Avoid sun exposure for a minimum of 72 hours post-treatment to achieve the best results.
  3. Muscle Exercise: Practice exercising the treated muscles for 1-2 hours after treatment, such as frowning, raising eyebrows, and squinting, to promote optimal results.
  4. Physical Activities: Refrain from strenuous activities like straining, heavy lifting, or vigorous exercise for 3-4 hours following the treatment to allow the toxin to bind effectively.
  5. Area Manipulation: Avoid manipulation of the treated area for 3-4 hours post-treatment, including refraining from facial treatments, peels, or microdermabrasion.
  6. Positioning: Do not recline or lay down for four hours after the injection, refrain from scratching or rubbing the area, and avoid bending forward during this time period.
  7. Bruising Management: If you experience bruising, it usually resolves within three to seven days. You can gently apply makeup over the bruises.

Xeomin® FAQs

When Will I See Results from My Xeomin® Treatment?

Most patients notice visible changes within a relatively short period, ranging from as soon as three days to up to two weeks after the procedure.

Should I Bring A Driver To Take Me Home After My Xeomin® Injection?

It's generally safe to drive yourself home after the cosmetic procedure because it does not cause significant impairment that would make it unsafe for you to drive.

Will My Xeomin® Injections Change The Way I Sleep?

These injections may not directly change the way you sleep. However, some potential side effects could impact sleep, such as general muscle weakness or visual impairment. Post-procedure, Dr. Barr will recommend specific sleeping positions and activities.

Does Xeomin® Have Risks Or Side Effects?

All medical procedures come with potential risks, including infection, bleeding, poor wound healing, and an adverse reaction. With a botulinum toxin type, the most significant risk would be the movement of the botulinum toxin into unintended areas.

You may experience common side effects such as headaches, bruising, and swelling, which should resolve quickly. However, if you experience difficulty breathing, swallowing, or extreme muscle weakness, alert your doctor immediately.

If I'm Pregnant Or Breastfeeding, Can I Still Have Xeomin® Injections?

We do not recommend botulinum toxin products for pregnant or breastfeeding women, due to a lack of safety studies.

How Can Xeomin® Help Patients With Lambert Eaton Syndrome?

Lambert Eaton is a rare autoimmune disorder that affects the neuromuscular junction. In LES, the body's immune system mistakenly attacks the calcium channels in the nerve cells, hindering the release of the neurotransmitters essential for muscle contraction, and resulting in muscle weakness, particularly in the limbs. It can also cause symptoms such as difficulty walking, climbing stairs, or lifting objects.

Aside from cosmetic uses, Xeomin® has an off-label use in treating various conditions, addressing specific symptoms related to neck pain, musculoskeletal pain, muscle stiffness or spasticity that can occur as a result of the condition. By targeting and reducing muscle stiffness, Xeomin® injections can potentially help improve mobility and alleviate discomfort experienced by individuals with LEMS.

However, this off-label use should be determined by a licensed medical doctor, who can discuss the risk and benefits of such off-label use with each individual patient.

How Much Do Xeomin® Treatments Cost?

Cost varies based on the needs and desires of individual patients. During your consultation with our patient counselor, we will advise a course of action tailored for you. For your convenience, we accept CareCredit®, cash, checks, and credit cards.

How Does Xeomin® Differ From Botox® And Dysport®?

All three neuromodulators are safe and effective cosmetic treatments with FDA approval. However, some slight nuances distinguish them from each other:

  1. Protein Content: While Dysport® and BOTOX® contain complexing proteins, Xeomin® is considered "naked," meaning it lacks accessory proteins. This purity distinction may influence factors such as diffusion and spread.
  2. Diffusion and Surface Area Coverage: Xeomin® and Dysport® have better and quicker diffusion than BOTOX®, making them potentially more suitable for treating a wider surface area, while BOTOX® tends to be more localized.
  3. Allergenic Potential: Xeomin® is more pure because it lacks accessory proteins, which could help reduce potential allergic reactions to its active toxin.
  4. Onset Time: Dysport® typically shows results slightly faster than BOTOX® and Xeomin®, with visible changes appearing within 24 hours.
  5. Duration: Results from Xeomin® and Dysport® can last up to six months or longer, with BOTOX® typically lasting three to four months. However, results may vary depending on each patient's unique muscle movement patterns.
  6. Dosage Differences: Because of its purity and concentration, higher doses of Xeomin® may be needed to achieve similar results as BOTOX® or Dysport®.

Overall, patients should seek input from their doctor and consider several factors, including individual needs and desired outcome, before choosing among these neuromodulators.

Our Faqs

Q

If I am seeking to undergo a combination of procedures, will they be done together or consecutively? What is the timeline for multiple procedures?

A

The answer depends on multiple factors, including the specific combination of procedures, your recovery rates, your age and health status, and your behaviors or habits. More invasive surgeries typically require recovery time ranging between 6 and 12 weeks to 6 months, and surgeries to the same area of your body will also generally require recovery time between procedures.

However, if you are in good health and the combination of procedures in question will be performed on different parts of your body and are not especially invasive, a combination of procedures could potentially be approved together on a case-by-case basis. It is imperative that the combination of procedures does not compromise your healing, and your attention to prescribed pre-operation and recovery habits also plays a significant role. Schedule a consultation for an assessment and guidance regarding the procedures you are considering.

Q

Will it be obvious that I “got work done” after my procedure?

A

While aging affects us all, there are steps we can take to put forth a more vibrant appearance. We seek to perform subtle adjustments to address imperfections and the wear of time while retaining your natural look. While you should notice an improvement, the glaring changes or distortions in appearance you are concerned about and may have seen from other surgeons’ work do not meet the standard of quality plastic and cosmetic surgery we perform in our office.

Dr. Frederic M. Barr is a board-certified Plastic & Cosmetic Surgeon with over 30 years of experience performing Plastic Surgery in South Florida. We enhance and refine your appearance according to your goals. Review our Gallery of Before & After Photos to see some examples of our work.

Q

What does Breast Explant Surgery entail, and will my breasts be “back to normal” after the surgery?

A

For patients with Breast Implant Illness (BII), which can include allergy, auto-immune, and thyroid hormone issues, this has been an emerging topic with significant press coverage in recent years. Although numerous medical professionals have demonstrated varying responses to these women’s concerns, we believe in addressing these women’s experiences and symptoms. In response to this phenomenon, we have also chosen not to perform new breast implant surgeries. We perform Total Capsulectomy on patients with breast implants, which involves the removal of both the saline or silicone implant and the capsule around it.

Removal of the implants and surrounding scar tissue has been shown to improve women’s health concerning these symptoms. While some women choose no further procedure following Breast Explant Surgery, some patients elect to have a Mastopexy procedure that involves reshaping the breast tissue for a pleasant cosmetic breast appearance. We welcome your specific questions regarding these procedures and their anticipated effects for your situation. See our Breast Implant Explantation (Total Capsulectomy) page for more detailed information, including before-and-after photo examples.

Q

Are injectables safe, and are some safer than others? What are the dangers, and how can I avoid them?

A

We only utilize injectables and safe procedures for our patients, though any procedure involves some degree of risk. Proper performance and the surgeon's skills and experience performing the procedure are vital factors affecting patients’ safety. At Palm Beach Plastic & Cosmetic Surgery, our surgeon is Board-Certified, with over 30 years of experience. We enforce a high standard to maintain safety for our clients and competitors. See our Injectable Procedures Overview for a list of injectable procedures and more information on each.
