Achieving a rejuvenated, lifted appearance without surgery may sound too good to be true. However, with advancements in aesthetic medicine, PDO threads offer exactly that. This type of nonsurgical facelift allows individuals to restore definition and reposition sagging skin in under an hour, all without the use of a scalpel.

At Palm Beach Plastic & Cosmetic Surgery, Dr. Bonnie Marting, DNP, APRN, specializes in this minimally invasive approach, delivering a rejuvenated appearance and naturally beautiful results while prioritizing patient comfort and satisfaction.

What Are PDO Threads and How Do They Work?

PDO stands for polydioxanone, a biodegradable material widely used in medicine for decades. PDO threads are specifically designed with precision cutouts that adhere to subcutaneous tissue when gently placed under the skin. During the procedure, Dr. Bonnies uses a cannula to guide the threads into place. Once positioned, she removes the cannula, and the threads remain securely anchored in the tissue where they can be adjusted to produce a nonsurgical facelift effect.

The initial results are immediately visible, offering a subtle lift in areas like the face and neck. However, the procedure’s real magic appears over time. PDO threads stimulate your body’s natural collagen production, which gradually tightens and supports the treated areas for long-lasting results. This fresh and new collagen replaces aging, degraded collagen, resulting in skin tightening and an enhancement of the facial skin’s elasticity for a more youthful appearance.

The Benefits of PDO Threads, a Versatile Solution for Enhancing Your Natural Beauty

For individuals seeking skin rejuvenation and younger looking skin without having to undergo a surgical facelift, PDO threads provide a versatile solution.

  • Minimally invasive approach: there is no need for incisions, stitches, or extensive recovery times.
  • Customizable outcomes: Dr. Bonnie can tailor this nonsurgical facelift according to each patient’s specific needs and desired results.
  • Stimulate Collagen Production in facial skin: PDO threads improve skin texture, skin quality, volume, and firmness over time.
  • Minimal downtime: this nonsurgical facelift takes between 30-45 minutes in the office.
  • Immediate yet natural-looking results: in contrast to some traditional facelifts, this non-surgical procedure achieves facial rejuvenation without dramatically or artificially changing your appearance.
  • Safety and reliability: because the materials are biocompatible, the absorbable sutures fully dissolve within the body.

PDO threads are ideal for individuals seeking to address sunken cheeks and mild-to-moderate sagging in the jawline and neck.

How Many Threads Do I Need?

How many threads are required depends upon the desired outcome and realistic expectations. The initial consultation is the key to discovering what may be needed. During that time, Dr. Bonnie listens to what troubles you. She will gently maneuver your skin around to see what is possible, then give you an estimate of how many may be needed. Sometimes she will add a bit of filler to the procedure to achieve the enhanced desired outcome.

Occasionally, Dr. Bonnie will hear, “I really just want to try one on each side, just to see what happens”. She’s compelled to tell you that almost nothing will be achieved by that, so we don’t go in that direction because we never want a patient to be dissatisfied, and undertreating will definitely result in that.

There are various reasons for people wanting to “just stick their toe in the water” when it comes to threads, but there is nothing to be learned from that. The idea can freak people out (putting sutures in my face!). Dr Bonnie will admit that before she had much knowledge of the procedure, she had a bit of the same. But now it is clear as day. It is a mixture of physics and medicine.

FL Aesthetics & The Importance of a Personalized Consultation

Before committing to a PDO thread lift, patients schedule a consultation with Dr. Bonnie. This session allows you to voice your concerns, ask questions, and gain a clear understanding of what the procedure entails. Dr. Bonnie takes the time to assess your skin’s laxity, elasticity, and overall condition to determine whether PDO threads can deliver the results you desire.

During the consultation, she will pull the skin in various directions. If the skin has next to no movement, then threads most likely will not achieve anything. But if her fingers can realign the skin somewhat significantly, the threads will definitely be successful. Dr. Bonnie pulls the skin in various directions, called vectors. Sometimes two or three threads are needed for one vector. When it comes to realigning neck skin, the threads have to be placed in various positions that will allow for excess, in order for the anterior to be lifted and smooth.

The minimum amount of threads to be used on someone that really has very little issue is 6, 3 on each side. More often, it is 5 to 7 placed on each side in order to achieve a “wow”, which is always what is desired. Because the area is anesthetized prior to placing the cannula, the only feeling one has is a tiny bit of pressure as the cannula is inserted. The cannula comes right out immediately, and then the thread is cut, with the end of it being buried in the subcutaneous space. There is no outward evidence of any thread.

To summarize, during your consultation, you can expect the following process:

  • Listening and understanding your goals – Whether it’s softening the appearance of jowls or achieving a more defined neckline, your concerns will be heard and addressed.
  • Physical assessment – Dr. Bonnie will gently manipulate your skin in various directions (referred to as vectors) to evaluate its level of movement. This determines both the feasibility of the procedure and the placement of threads for optimal results.
  • Individualized recommendations – Every face is unique, so your treatment plan will be customized. Dr. Bonnie will provide an estimate of how many threads may be necessary and discuss the possibility of combining threads with other procedures, such as dermal fillers, for enhanced results.

This approach informs every patient set to undergo a PDO thread lift, helping them feel comfortable and confident in their decision.

Addressing Concerns About PDO Thread Lifts

Understandably, the thought of placing threads beneath your skin can evoke hesitation. Many patients express initial concerns about discomfort or the safety of the procedure. At our concierge practice, we take extensive measures to ensure a positive experience from start to finish.

Is the procedure painful?

Before placing the threads, we numb the treatment area with a local anesthetic. Most patients report feeling only minor pressure or pulling sensations during the procedure, with no significant pain.

Will the threads show through the skin?

We discreetly place the threads beneath the skin and trim them carefully to ensure there are no visible signs of the procedure.

What results can I realistically expect?

Dr. Bonnie emphasizes realistic expectations during your consultation and explains the potential outcomes based on your skin type and goals.

What to Expect After Your PDO Thread Lift

One of the most attractive features of PDO thread lifts is the relatively smooth recovery process. Common post-procedure experiences include mild swelling, bruising, or soreness, which typically resolve within a few days. Dr. Bonnie encourages patients to follow these aftercare guidelines for optimal results:

  • Avoid heavy lifting or vigorous exercise for at least one week to minimize strain on the treated areas.
  • Refrain from excessive facial movements or activities that may stretch the skin (e.g., chewing gum) for the first several days.
  • Keep your head elevated when lying down and avoid sleeping on your side for the initial week.

Adhering to these guidelines will maximize the longevity of your results, which can last up to 12 months or longer, depending on the individual and their skin’s natural aging process.
