After Breast Lift Surgery, Cup Size Goes Down
In 2012, 90,000 women in the United States underwent mastopexy, commonly known as a breast lift, according to statistics from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons. Breast lift surgery is so popular because it restores a more youthful appearance to sagging breasts due to aging, pregnancy, breastfeeding, etc.
The latest studies are now revealing that many women are finding that their bra cup size is decreasing. “But the difference reflects the effects of the breast lift itself, rather than a true reduction in breast size,” according to the study by Dr. Katie Elizabeth Weichman of New York University and colleagues. “They believe their results have important implications for talking to patients about the expected results after breast lift surgery. “
The study, which found that the average decrease was one cup size, followed 20 women after five years with an average age of 47 who received only breast lift surgery. All women reported feeling satisfied with the results of their breast lift surgery.
While this may seem like a drawback to breast lift surgery, the cause of this decrease is due to women wearing cup sizes that are closer to the size they should be wearing. The excess skin and soft tissue women have prior to surgery may be the reason for their choice to wear a looser-fitting bra. Following breast lift surgery, women may be more likely to choose a smaller cup for reasons of comfort.
