Since they were first approved in 1976, silicone breast implants, created by Drs. Cronin and Gerow in 1961, have had a long history of controversy. Prior to their inception by the FDA, women who desired breast augmentation had a choice of either wax injections or Avalon sponges - with less than stellar results. Because silicone is the most inert material for human implantation, it was the impetus for the development of silicone breast implants.

Breast implant illness includes a litany of ailments that cannot be explained by medical science. Although there is no definitive test at this time, women with silicone breast implants may experience thyroid-related issues such as extreme weight loss or weight gain. Other women may experience severely dry eyes, mouth, and nails, along with hair loss, and body rashes for no medically defined reason.
