The most notable gains made among patients having the surgery are reduction in depression and increase in happiness. Those seem laudable goals for the procedure, called temporalis tendon transfer, in a Baltimore study lead by Dr. Patrick Byrne, director of facial plastic and reconstructive surgery in the department of otolaryngology and head and neck surgery at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
The study, discussed in more detail at The American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS) The following quote from the Forbes story sums it up quite nicely.
"Facial paralysis is absolutely devastating. When you talk to patients, what bothers them the most of all the myriad problems, the inability to smile is the number one thing mentioned by these patients," Byrne stated. "People who smile are happier, and people who can't smile are depressed. It really affects the brain. There's no question we've seen this in these patients. They are happier and more upbeat after having this procedure."

American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery Warning

Avoid mesotherapy/injection lipolysis treatments until further research on safety, efficacy

New York, NY (May 14, 2007) - The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) released today a warning against the use of injection fat loss treatments. Patients are advised to avoid these procedures, which are commonly known as lipolysis, mesotherapy, or the brand names Lipodissolve and Lipostabil. Although marketed as fat loss treatments, these procedures are scientifically unproven, lacking any objective data on safety and efficacy. In addition, none of these procedures has received FDA approval, with the ingredients poorly defined. The procedures may also be offered by persons without sufficient medical training, thereby putting patients at risk of harm.

“Safety needs to come first. We do not have definitive information on injection fat loss treatments. All we have is a few small studies and anecdotal evidence. Until we know more, we cannot recommend these procedures to patients,” said Foad Nahai, MD, president of the Society. “The bottom line for patients is this: Don't allow yourself to be injected with an unknown and untested substance.”

Despite media and advertising claims that mesotherapy or injection lipolysis treatments can safely and effectively eliminate unwanted fat, published peer-reviewed scientific reports of properly performed controlled prospective trials to confirm either safety or efficacy do not exist. Furthermore, there is no objective data on how these treatments produce ‘fat dissolving' effects and there are numerous reports of complications documented in the medical literature, including bacterial infection, granulomas (disfiguring masses of chronically inflamed tissue) and localized necrosis (tissue death), particularly when injections were done by lay people.

“ Mesotherapy treatment centers are opening all over the country and these consumer outlets may not be staffed by trained medical professionals. Patients seeking fat dissolving treatments should be educated about the lack of clinical data supporting these treatments and cautioned to wait until there is reliable information to guide their decision,” said Alan H. Gold, MD, president of the Aesthetic Surgery Education and Research Foundation (ASERF). “For now, the only proven method for eliminating unwanted fat cells is suction assisted lipoplasty, a procedure that has a long and successful track record for both safety and effectiveness."

A placebo-controlled study is being sponsored by ASERF to demonstrate safety and efficacy—or lack thereof—of one type of injection lipolysis treatment. The formula that will be used for injection in this 20-patient study —phosphatidylcholine (PPC)/sodium deoxycholate (DC)— is one that has shown the most promise in small, published trials. The study, which will be conducted under FDA supervision, will follow patients for 46 weeks to evaluate the efficacy of PPC/DC for injection lipolysis and collect data on local and systemic reactions and any long-term complications. At present, n either drug being studied in this trial is FDA approved for subcutaneous injection for any purpose. Once completed, the results will be published in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal and presented at an annual ASAPS meeting.
The 2400-member American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) is the only plastic surgery organization devoted entirely to the advancement of cosmetic surgery.
ASAPS is recognized throughout the world as the authoritative source for cosmetic surgery education. U.S. members are certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Canadian members are certified in plastic surgery by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
Toll-free referral line: 888.ASAPS.11 (272.7711). This newspaper article from Canada.com discusses a new book out by a feminist scholar which takes issue with TV makeover programs which include cosmetic surgery procedures. The following is a quote from the article:
Cressida Heyes has a problem with reality shows like Extreme Makeover, and she's letting people know about it. Heyes, a philosophy professor at the University of Alberta, was recently published in the journal Feminist Media Studies' March issue. Her article, "Cosmetic Surgery and the Televisual Makeover."
While it is possible to go too far with anything, most people choosing elective Plastic Surgery are making minor changes, rather than major makeovers as depicted in the "Televisual" programs. The quote from the article which makes the most sense is from Dr. Elizabeth Hall-Findlay, a Banff, Alberta.-based cosmetic plastic surgeon, who compares breast reduction, breast augmentation, facelifts and tummy tucks - to home repairs.
"It's OK to fix a saggy porch," she says, just like it's OK to cut away excess skin from someone's eyelids to get rid of a permanent tired expression. A lot of what we do in cosmetic surgery is take away the wrong impression."

Plastic Surgeons Refine Surgical Techniques to Meet Future Boomer Demand

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill., April 25 /PRNewswire/ -- With new laser treatments and injectable wrinkle fillers and fighters, many baby boomers are choosing to postpone the facelift -- but it is not dead! In fact, patients age 45 and older may find they only achieve their desired result with surgical rejuvenation options. A study in May's Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery(R), the official medical journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), reveals a new facelift technique that offers patients more options.
"With the introduction of injectable fillers and Botox, many people over 45 believe they can achieve the same results as a facelift without surgery," said ASPS President-elect Richard D'Amico, MD. "However, as we get older our brow lines, jowls and wrinkles can become too deep for an injectable to smooth out. When a patient's degree of facial aging is such that an injectable can not achieve the desired result, surgery is the next natural progression."
In the study, the authors placed the facelift incision, in a specific angle, within the side burn and temple areas (traditional techniques place the incision above the ear). Hair grows back through the scar which is hidden within the hair. The technique allows women to comfortably pull their hair back without exposing a scar and men to grow sideburns without the embarrassment of missing hair. The technique also allows for better repositioning of tissue, further reducing the risk of the "wind blown," overdone look
Although surgery may provide better results, injectables still play an important role in facial rejuvenation for the over 45 set. "After a facelift, fillers and Botox are key adjuncts to help restore volume and maintain surgical improvements for many more years," said Dr. D'Amico.
"Whether injectable fillers, surgery or a combination of both, the procedure selected should fit and meet the needs of the patient," said Bahaman Guyuron, MD, ASPS Member Surgeon and study co-author. "With the youngest boomer turning 42 and the oldest turning 60 this year, the demand for surgical procedures that produce results without the tell-tale signs of having had a facelift are going to continue to increase."
Facelifts are the second most popular cosmetic surgical procedure for men and women over age 55, according to new ASPS statistics. Nearly 102,000 people aged 40 and older had a facelift in 2006.
For referrals to ASPS Member Surgeons call 888-4-PLASTIC (475-2784) or visit http://www.plasticsurgery.org and also learn more about cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery.
The American Society of Plastic Surgeons is the largest organization of board-certified plastic surgeons in the world. With more than 6,000 members, the Society is recognized as a leading authority and information source on cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery. ASPS comprises more than 90 percent of all board-certified plastic surgeons in the United States. Founded in 1931, the Society represents physicians certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery or The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

Plastic Surgery Loan for Lebanese Citizens

The First National Bank of Lebanon is offering Plastic Surgery Loans of up to $3,000 without collateral with a term of 6 months to 2 years for Lebanese citizens and up to $5,000 with collateral and you can prove you have a job with income over $900 monthly. Botox injections lead the list with "The number of visits for men seeking Botox treatments increased 233% (to 313,519) from 2000 to 2005" according to the Amercian Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).
The story claims that men typically care less for their skin and take few precautions to protect their youthful look. The article goes on to suggest that most dermatologists and plastic surgeons use skin moisturizers, creams and sunblocks on a daily basis because they understand that at a certain age, the skin will lose its suppleness due to years of excessive sun or exposure to the elements without protection.
The piece also suggests that men are getting more fillers such as "Restylane," a filler used to avoid deep lines and folds in the jowl and around the nose and mouth.
Another area men pay attention to is hair removal between their eyebrows, on the neck and back using laser hair removal treatments.
Although me get full facelifts less often than women, at just 12% of plastic surgery patients, they more often look for less invasive procedures such as those discussed in this story.

Plastic Surgery Patients Recognized by ASPS

Plastic surgery patients honored for courage, altruism Awards presented during ASPS Annual Scientific Meeting
SAN FRANCISCO -- Anyone can find themselves in a life-threatening situation ñ a nurse, a Marine, a student ñ but who has the strength to survive let alone the energy to think about others? Devastating illness, injury, or deformity results in life-altering reconstructive plastic surgery for hundreds of thousands of people, yet only a few have the determination to get beyond their own dilemma and step up to help others. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) will present the Patients of Courage: Triumph Over Adversity awards to four inspirational patients - whose lives were restored through reconstructive plastic surgery, and whose charitable actions influence the lives around them - during Plastic Surgery 2006 on Saturday, Oct. 7, at 4:30 p.m. at the Moscone Convention Center in San Francisco.

Plastic surgeons restore lives by performing reconstructive surgery on patients suffering from illness, injury or disease that range in scope from "routine" to potentially fatal. ASPS Member Surgeons treat patients of courage every day, each with a unique and remarkable tale of overcoming adversity.

"The courage and determination these patients demonstrate is awe-inspiring. Rather than looking at the challenges they face as an obstacle, they transform these challenges into a catalyst to educate and assist others," said ASPS President Bruce Cunningham, MD. "Their stories reveal the amazing accomplishments made possible by the special bond between patients and plastic surgeons."

Lillie Shockney, 52, of Baltimore, was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent mastectomy in both breasts. Lillie initially postponed reconstruction; however, with the introduction of the DIEP flap reconstruction, Lillie realized the benefits it could bring her and multitudes of women. Whether she is writing books, testifying to Congress, founding the organization Mothers Supporting Daughters with Breast Cancer, Lillie is an outspoken advocate and educator for breast cancer patients. Originally a nurse in the neurosciences department, she is currently the administrative director at the Johns Hopkins Avon Foundation Breast Center, and will soon be the first non-physician to be named president of the National Consortium of Breast Centers.

Ashley McGrath, 20, of Palm Bay, Fla., was born with a combination of congenital deformities that often lead to death in infancy or extremely low IQ for those who survive into their teens. Ashley surprised her family and doctors by learning to communicate through sign language by age four but was unable to speak due to a severe cleft palate. Despite doctors' concerns, Ashley's family was adamant about correcting the physical deformity, so Ashley's plastic surgeon decided to correct her palate. By second grade, Ashley began entering speech competitions and winning, securing the state speech competition with the Future Business Leaders of America while in high school. Ashley works with the "English as a Second Language" program, volunteers at church, raises money for charity, and recently received several college scholarships for her grades and public service.

Susan Carlisle, 36, of Mount Airy, N.C., has been severely obese most of her life. Weighing 300 pounds by the time she was 11 years old, Susan attempted to control her weight as an adult through gastric bypass surgery, but complications arose which led to the reversal of the bypass and additional weight. Through diet and determination she then lost over 300 pounds; however, the damage to her body caused numerous medical problems including a life-threatening infection on her leg. Susan's plastic surgery saved her leg and her life. After a lengthy recovery, she returned to college to become an advocate for people with disabilities. Quickly beginning her mission, she is working to change the culture at her school which denies equal rights to students with disabilities.

Marine Sergeant Oscar Canon, 27, of San Diego, was on a protection detail assignment when insurgents attacked his convoy. While providing protective fire in front of the convoy, Oscar was struck by a rocket-propelled grenade and suffered life-threatening injuries to his leg and hip, but he still managed to safely evacuate all those he was protecting. Oscar was told he may never walk again let alone return to duty; however, multiple reconstructive surgeries to save his leg and retain function enabled him to beat the odds. Today, Oscar is running and training for the Marine Corps physical readiness test to remain on active duty. He is a spokesperson for injured Marines, where he talks to veterans' groups, political organizations, and the public to increase awareness and funding for medical and social support.

The Patients of Courage: Triumph Over Adversity program is supported by Ethicon Inc., a Johnson & Johnson company.

For referrals to ASPS Member Surgeons certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, call 888-4-PLASTIC (475-2784) or visit www.plasticsurgery.org where you can also learn more about cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery.

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) is the largest organization of board-certified plastic surgeons in the world. With more than 6,000 members, the society is recognized as a leading authority and information source on cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery. ASPS comprises more than 90 percent of all board-certified plastic surgeons in the United States. Founded in l93l, the society represents physicians certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery or The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

Note: Reporters can register to attend Plastic Surgery 2006 and arrange interviews by logging on to www.plasticsurgery.org/news_room/Registration.cfm or by contacting ASPS Public Relations at (847) 228-9900 or in San Francisco, Oct. 7-11 at (415) 905-1730.
Contact: Brian Hugins
media@plasticsurgery.org
847-228-9900
American Society of Plastic Surgeons
California Bill 438 Allows Dentists to Perform Facial Plastic Surgery

California Senate Bill 438 is identical to legislation that was passed in the House and Senate in 2004 but was ultimately vetoed by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. The survey was conducted on behalf of the Academy to gauge current consumer perceptions as it relates to celebrity "must-have" features, cosmetic procedures and consumer misconceptions on practitioners' education, qualifications and training.
The survey showed that cosmetic surgery is something that only 6% of the adult population has done, but that almost 20% of the population aspires to do at some point in their lifetime. The survey also provides insights about the perceptions and myths surrounding cosmetic surgery. For example, the results show that only about half of consumers are aware of the difference between a cosmetic surgeon and a plastic surgeon -- which emphasizes the need for patient education surrounding cosmetic surgery.
Additional highlights of the results report include:

An overwhelming five out of six consumers believe that personal appearance is key to professional success.
When asked how open they would be about a cosmetic surgery procedure, 33% of consumers said they would tell only those who asked, while 18% said they would tell only close friends and family.
The two most wanted celebrity features, according to the survey, are Jennifer Aniston's eyes for women (46%) and Nick Lachey's abs for men (51%).
If there was disposable income to be had, 46% of consumers say they would forego an expensive vacation or luxury car to pay for cosmetic surgery.
About 12% of the men surveyed believe they will have cosmetic surgery at some point in the future.
Only 18% of consumers cited fear of pain as a reason for foregoing cosmetic surgery. Instead, the cost is what would discourage 54% of those surveyed from having a procedure.
About 20% of consumers are unclear on what a cosmetic surgeon is.

The AACS Consumer Perception Survey was conducted by Synovate, Inc., and included a total of 1,510 representative interviews. Additional survey methodology and statistics can be obtained by contacting the Academy.
The American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery is a professional medical society whose members are dedicated to patient safety and physician education in cosmetic surgery. Members of the AACS are dermatologic surgeons, facial plastic surgeons, plastic surgeons, ocular plastic surgeons, oral and maxillofacial surgeons or other surgical backgrounds -- all of whom specialize in cosmetic surgery. AACS is an organization that represents all cosmetic surgeons in the American Medical Association through its seat in the AMA House of Delegates.
Source: American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery http://www.cosmeticsurgery.org
Breast Implant Device Reduces Displacement

New Plastic Surgery Device Keeps Breast Implants in Place

As cosmetic surgery patients select larger and larger breast implants the long term risk for implant displacement increases. A new mesh sling keeps breast implants from moving too low on the chest or into the woman’s armpit and replaces a longstanding procedure which is prone to failure.

Munster, IN (PRWEB) August 31, 2006 -- Keeping breast implants in place is the goal of a new surgical procedure invented by an Indiana plastic surgeon. Dr Robert Frank, a board certified plastic surgeon and member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, became frustrated with the number of women he was seeing with older breast implants which had become displaced over time.

“These women didn’t need a breast lift,” said Frank, “It was their implants that had dropped not their breast tissue.” This condition, commonly know as bottoming out, was making women less satisfied with their breasts and their implants. Bottoming out can be due to the weight of an implant pulling on weakened tissues or can be the result of poor implant placement during the initial procedure. “The first woman I saw for this problem had had her implants placed by one of the most prominent plastic surgeons in Chicago so I guess the lesson is it could happen to anyone and at any time after the implants are placed,” said Frank.

When patients experience bottoming out, they often complain that one breast sits higher on their chest than the other due to uneven implant pocket formation. In more advanced cases, the nipple appears to sit too high on the breast and in the worst scenario, patients may become concern that their nipple might “pop out” when wearing a bra or bathing suit top. “The problem, “said Frank,” is not that the nipple sits too high, it’s that the implant sits too low.”

Traditional techniques for repair of bottoming out have involved a procedure known as a capsulorrhaphy in which the scar capsule supporting the implant is brought together to close off the pocket where the implant sits. “Unfortunately, sewing weak tissues together and then replacing the implant which caused the initial stress is a setup for failure,” said Frank. Studies have reported over 50% failure rates for capsulorrhaphy.

Frank’s technique uses a patented mesh sling to support and bear the weight of the implant. “General surgeons have used mesh for years to repair hernias elsewhere in the body, “he said, “to some degree this is just a hernia of the breast.” The mesh not only closes off the defect caused by the stretched tissue but, acts as a scaffold for new scar tissue. “Once the scar tissue has grown into the mesh, the chance of recurrence becomes very small.” said Frank. This process occurs within about two weeks. Patients report the mesh feels much like the implant does and after a few weeks most are back to their normal activities.

A second group of implant related problems is also well suited for mesh repair. “I see patients frequently who’s implants fall into their armpits when they lay back, “ said Frank, “unfortunately, few plastic surgeons examine their patients in this position so often they aren’t even aware there’s a problem”. The same mesh sling placed vertically can be used to close off this “lateral displacement” giving patient back the cleavage they enjoyed initially after their surgery.

To date, Frank has used his mesh sling on over 30 breasts and has received rave reviews by patients treated. Unlike the older capsulorrhaphy procedure, no patients treated with the mesh have had recurrent bottoming out. Word of the new device has spread and patients have traveled to Indiana from Minnesota, Florida, Texas, California and all throughout the Chicagoland/Northwest Indiana area specifically for the mesh technique. “Given the option of mesh or losing their implants, many patients will gladly make the trip,” Frank said.

For additional information about implant displacement and the mesh sling contact Dr Frank via www.ariasurgery.com.

About Dr Robert E. They both visit the doctor together, according to a New York Times story out this weekend.
Patients are visiting the office of their plastic surgeon in pairs and even groups of three. Doctors are handling these visits differently, depending on their own office established policies by billing each person separately, while seeing them at the same time. Some claim to attend the appointment of a friend just to lend moral support but then ask the doctor for advice while in the examination room with their pals.
Some plastic surgeons are insisting on separating the confidants to avoid becoming distracted or confusing the friends when advice for one is taken as advice for the other. One case, discussed in the Times article, was unlikely to confuse anyone, but did create a joke between the two women seeing a California Plastic Surgeon:
“We’re seeing more of the sympathetic buddy,” said Dr. W. Grant Stevens, the medical director of Marina Plastic Surgery Associates in Marina del Rey, Calif. “I think over all there is more curiosity about plastic surgery in general. The buddy may have his or her own curiosity. It is a nonthreatening way for the buddy to have the plastic surgery experience.”

In certain situations and with appropriate behavior from friends, the buddy can ease the fear and tension of consultations, as happened when two women entered Dr. Stevens’s office together, all giggles.

“One wanted a breast reduction and one wanted a breast augmentation,” Dr. Stevens recalled, “and of course the joke was, ‘Can you take them off of her and put them on me?’ It breaks the ice a little bit.”

Cindy Crawford, Botox, Collagen & Vitamin Injections

Last week in Gala magazine, former supermodel Cindy Crawford, now 40 years old, shocked women everywhere by admitting to regular visits to her plastic surgeon. The news has celebrity and gossip magazines buzzing and fan sites chattering about botox, vitamin and collagen injections since Crawford credits those treatments from her own plastic surgeon as the key to her own beauty. Crawford has her own line of skin care products and some customers may feel cheated if they expect her creams and ointments to do the same magic for them as it does for Crawford.
She was quoted in Gala saying,
"I'm not going to lie to myself: past a certain age, creams work on the texture of your skin, but in order to restore elasticity, all I can really count on is vitamin injections, Botox and collagen. I owe the quality of my skin to a cosmetic surgeon."
While many feign surprise, it is no secret to the majority of women that aging reduces elasticity and dulls the youthful glow of their skin. The page includes the following sections:

Why consider cosmetic surgery? This section details reasons one may elect to have surgery done, including self confidence and improved social lives.
Is cosmetic surgery for you? This section of the Mayo clinic page reviews initial expectations, the time and expense involved in surgery and previews potential risks.
What are the possible risks? This section itemizes most serious risks of plastic surgery including nausea, dizziness, pain, numbness, bleeding, infection and assymetry.
How to find a qualified cosmetic surgeon. This section details certifications and referrals for plastic surgeons and warns of false certifications or getting referrals from any sources unknown by the patient.
What to expect during an initial consultation. This final section reviews what to expect from initial interviews with a plastic surgeon and suggests that the following questions be asked of potential surgeons:

Are there treatments other than surgery that might work just as well or better for me?

Am I a good candidate for this procedure? What follow-up care will I receive?

How often is "touch-up" surgery needed, and is it covered in the cost estimate?

The Mayo Clinic is a highly regarded medical facility and the advice given on this Plastic Surgery advice page should be viewed as excellent place to begin an exploration of the decision to have most types of elective cosmetic surgery.

Check out our Skin Care Line

Palm Beach Plastic Surgery Skin Care Line
A skin care line to refresh and rejuvenate.
