BOTOX® has been erasing wrinkles and turning back the effects of time on people’s faces for decades. The cosmetic injection treatment has the honor of being the first FDA-approved product for removing wrinkles. It is one of the most common cosmetic procedures that doesn’t require plastic surgery or reconstructive surgery, and scientists are finding more and more uses for its unique properties.

At Palm Beach Plastic & Cosmetic Surgery, we can help you decide what treatment best addresses your concerns. If you are worried about frown lines or crow’s feet, we recommend that you consider BOTOX® cosmetic injections.

Let’s explore a little more about the 20-year journey of BOTOX® to help with your decision. If you have further questions after reading, please contact us to set up a consultation with our chief plastic surgeon, Dr. Fredric M. Barr. How It Started

BOTOX® is an excellent example of science enabling us to take a bad thing and turn it into something good. The injection contains the botulinum toxin, which originates from the Clostridium botulinum bacterium. Being infected with the bacterium causes botulism, a disease that paralyzes your muscles and can be fatal in the worst cases.

Scientists have studied this disease and found a way to use the botulinum toxin to help people. Initially, scientists used it to create a treatment for strabismus (crossed eyes). When they tested it on monkeys, they observed that it reduced wrinkles on their brow.

Though the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) initially approved the botulinum toxin for eye treatments, Allergan’s product BOTOX® became FDA approved in 2002 as a treatment to reduce wrinkles.

How It Works

BOTOX® injections are safe and work effectively to improve the youthful quality of your face. This impressive feat is possible because the botulinum toxin can stop the release of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine when injected into the nerves. As a result, muscle activity ceases and prevents the skin from wrinkling.

One of the most significant factors that cause wrinkles is the folding of your skin whenever you laugh, frown, or smile. Over time, the skin will start to show where the muscles have contracted again and again. A BOTOX® injection can stop muscle contractions, thus preserving the smoothness of your face.

How We Use It

BOTOX® does have other FDA-approved medical uses besides cosmetic procedures, such as treating excess sweating from the underarms, hands, or feet. Mainly, we use it to reduce unwanted wrinkles around and above your eyes.

Your doctor will inject BOTOX® into the muscles where you want to reduce wrinkles and stop the muscle activity in those areas. The effect should be noticeable in about four to seven days after the injection. Your face will look refreshed as the wrinkles fade, and you will wonder if you time-traveled back 10 years.

Recently, BOTOX® has been helping us in other areas. Since it relaxes muscles, plastic surgery specialists can use it to fix other facial imperfections caused by muscle contraction, improving the appearance of your lip line, neck, jaw, and smile. The use of BOTOX® for these treatments is available, but note it is currently only FDA approved for reducing wrinkles.

Benefits of BOTOX®

There’s a reason millions of people receive BOTOX® injections every year. All you have to do is review the abundance of patient testimonials. Here are just a few benefits you get for choosing BOTOX®:
